I am a PhD candidate in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Houston, advised by Dr. Christine Ehlig-Economides. I started in the field: before graduate school I spent more than three and a half years as an on-site production engineer at Qadirpur, one of Pakistan’s largest gas fields, managing workovers, stimulation, artificial lift, and well testing.

My research spans CO₂ utilization and storage, waterflooding design, and wastewater disposal, with field studies in the Permian Basin and offshore Northwest Australia. I developed a machine learning framework that identifies and characterizes leaking legacy wellbores (patent pending), work that was featured in the Houston Chronicle and on Houston Public Media. I am now building a wastewater disposal optimization tool to stop leakage events before they happen, under an Interagency Cooperation Contract between UH and the Railroad Commission of Texas.

More broadly, I am interested in building data-driven systems and technologies that rethink and streamline established industrial workflows.

Here is a selection of my research, starting with ongoing work:

Ongoing
Identifying Leaking Legacy Wellbores Using Satellite Imagery Analysis Under Wastewater Disposal

In progress · patent filing planned

Optical and SAR satellite imagery combined with machine learning to pinpoint where and when wellbores leak at county scale, building a spatiotemporal leakage dataset.

Why Hundreds of ‘Dead’ Oil Wells in Texas Are Coming Back to Life

Houston Public Media

Video interview on YouTube · November 12, 2025

How “zombie wells,” abandoned oil wells that were previously plugged, are leaking oil, gas, and wastewater and threatening groundwater in Texas.

A single Texas county has over 600 potential ‘zombie’ wells, study finds

Amanda Drane

Houston Chronicle · October 29, 2025

Coverage of our University of Houston study quantifying how many of the thousands of dormant oil wells in Texas may be leaking.

Before and during my PhD, I have worked in the following industry and research roles:

2025–2026

Co-Op Student, Operations

Hilcorp Energy · East Texas Asset · Houston, TX

Designed production restoration projects, returning a dead well to about 1 MMscf/d of gas. Analyzed the complete life of 200+ wells, building and maintaining accurate, chronological wellbore schematics. [recommendation letter on request]

2024

Research Intern

Gulf Coast Carbon Center, Bureau of Economic Geology · Austin, TX

Modeled leakage through a legacy wellbore under CO₂ injection with coupled wellbore–reservoir simulation in T2Well-ECO2N.

2023

Reservoir Engineer, Extern

SLB · CapturePoint · University of Houston Externship · Houston, TX

Built and history-matched a compositional model of Denver City Field and designed WAG cycles to optimize recovery.

2022–2023

Engineer, Intern

SEG EVOLVE Carbon Solutions Program · Houston, TX

Evaluated CO₂ storage in depleted fields offshore NW Australia with a team of 8 engineers and geoscientists.

2017–2021

Production Engineer, Qadirpur Gas Field
